Dental cleanings are a great way to clean your teeth, catch daily hygiene problems early on, and ensure your pearly whites remain in good shape. It’s important to talk to your dentist about your dental cleaning options, and understanding the different types can help you choose the right one for you.

Here are a few of the most popular forms of dental cleanings that we provide to new and existing patients at Dr. Ernie Soto‘s dental center.

Prophylaxis Dental Cleaning

A prophylaxis dental cleaning is more frequently known as regular dental cleaning, and it’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about scheduling your next dental appointment. It’s a common procedure that’s done as part of preventive dentistry and good oral hygiene.

Your hygienist will check your teeth and gum tissue, do a thorough cleaning, and eliminate plaque and tartar during a prophylaxis dental cleaning. Before your session ends, the dental hygienist will polish your teeth, floss them, and notify the dentist of any areas of concern for an examination.

Before leaving, you’ll almost certainly be inspected by a dentist. Unless your dentist suggests otherwise, most patients have a routine dental cleaning every six months, which can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Some people, believe it or not, prefer to have a complete tooth cleaning every three months, especially if they have more tartar than usual or are wearing Invisalign.

Gross Debridement

When a routine teeth cleaning is insufficient, a gross debridement is performed. It’s typically used for patients who have neglected to visit the dentist for a long time and have a considerable accumulation of plaque and tartar. Plaque is first removed using a scaler tool during a gross debridement. Because tartar is hardened plaque that has been on the teeth for a long time, it usually requires the use of a specific electric instrument to loosen and remove it. After that, a prophylaxis cleaning will be performed on a regular basis.

Scaling and Root Planing

Patients with gum disease, like as gingivitis or periodontitis, may benefit from a deep cleaning. This type of cleaning consists of two primary procedures. Plaque and tartar are first cleaned from the teeth’s exposed surfaces, as well as the gum pocket beneath the gum line. This is known as scaling.

After all plaque and tartar have been removed from the gum pockets, the root surface will be polished. This is referred to as planing, and it makes it easier for your gums to reconnect to your teeth. Scaling and root planing may necessitate the use of a local anesthetic and multiple dental appointments in some circumstances.

Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance is the term for routine oral care for people who have major dental problems. Periodontal maintenance is especially important for people who have gingivitis or periodontitis.

Periodontal maintenance usually entails regular visits to the dentist to have the entire mouth cleaned. It is usually done over a period of time or until all oral health issues have been addressed and the symptoms of gum disease have been controlled and brought under control.
